Ukraine ranks 20th in the EU + Ukraine ranking in terms of the overall Gender Equality Index score. This is based on the assessment of gender equality according to European standards in six key areas: work, money, knowledge, time, influence, and health.
We have the closest indicators to the European average in the areas of health, money, and time, the Office of the Vice Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration informed.
In the area of time use, the measurement of gender equality is related to the shares of paid and unpaid work of women and men, as well as the structure of time spent on work and leisure. According to the study, Ukraine’s score in the area of time exceeds the EU average due to the active involvement of women and men in charitable and volunteer activities.
At the same time, it also indicates an additional workload that will continue for some volunteers from 2022 and for others from 2024.
In addition, there is still an imbalance in the area of influence: women are underrepresented in leadership positions.
Among the positive developments, progress in the implementation of the Istanbul Convention, which strengthens the fight against gender-based violence, was also noted. Ukraine’s ratification of the Convention in 2022 was an important step in strengthening the protection of victims and expanding mechanisms to combat violence.
The calculation of the Gender Equality Index for Ukraine took 1.5 years. The next step will be to strengthen the capacity of government agencies to apply the European methodology of data collection and analysis, as well as to institutionalize the Ukrainian Index and calculate it on a regular basis. This will allow for a more effective assessment of progress in the field of equality and the formation of new democratic policies based on this data.
