Public Broadcasting Turns 9!

On 19 January 2026, Suspilne marks its ninth anniversary. From its establishment in 2017 as part of the post–Revolution of Dignity reform to becoming one of Ukraine’s most influential and trusted media institutions, Suspilne has come a long way. Today it comprises three nationwide TV channels, a network of 23 regional channels and Suspilne Crimea, three radio stations, dozens of YouTube channels, a digital platform, and a vast archive.

At the same time, since its creation Suspilne has never received 100% of the funding guaranteed by law, often operating on only 60–80%—or even less—of the required amount. Chronic underfunding places Suspilne in a non-competitive position and poses a direct threat to its independence as a public broadcaster.

Suspilne is the youngest public broadcaster in Europe. It is also the only independent media outlet in Ukraine that consistently adheres to professional journalistic standards on a daily basis—a fact confirmed by the annual White Lists of the Institute of Mass Information.

The Reanimation Package of Reforms Coalition was one of the driving forces behind the public broadcasting reform from the very beginning. Today, we once again emphasize that Suspilne must remain not only a benchmark for quality media, but also a model of how independent institutions should function in a democratic country.
