According to Article 62 of the Law of Ukraine “On Elections of the President of Ukraine”, debate is to take place on April 19, 2019, the last Friday before the day of repeat voting. Participation of candidates in the debate is not a mandatory requirement of the law, but it will show respect of Volodymyr Zelenskyi and Petro Poroshenko to the citizens of Ukraine.
Debate is not just a chance to change or maintain political ranking before the second round or to compete with an opponent. It will help citizens to understand the possible alternatives to Ukraine’s development over the next 5 years and help make informed choices.
The society chooses the Head of State whose values and vision will largely determine the political course of the country, the nature and pace of change. Responsibility for deciding who to entrust with the management of the country lies with citizens. Thus, voters have the right to clear answers about the further development of our country which the prospective president is planning to implement within the constitutional powers.
Democratic elections in the first round of the presidential election – this is an exam that has already been passed successfully. Participation of candidates in public debate where they present their own vision of the country’s development is another important test to show respect for democratic principles.
Ukrainians who have gone through the Revolution of Dignity, are restraining the armed aggression of Russia, pay taxes and work daily on positive changes deserve to see a public discussion between presidential candidates who compete in the decisive round.
