Address of Ukrainian civil society organizations to the European leaders

We, the representatives of the civil society of Ukraine, appeal to the member states of the European Union to ensure facilitation of Ukraine’s accelerated accession to the EU.

During the years of its independence, Ukraine has proved that it belongs with the European community, while in recent days our state has been courageously defending the borders of peaceful Europe from an aggressive attack by the Russian Federation. No country in the European Community has yet proved its right to be a part of it, like Ukraine. In 2014, during the Revolution of Dignity, Ukrainians defended the European integration course at the cost of their own lives. Immediately afterwards, Russia treacherously attacked Ukraine, occupied parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, and annexed Crimea. For eight years, Ukraine has not deserted its European choice, fought for its territory, for human rights and democracy, and launched a comprehensive implementation of reforms.

On 24 February 2022, at 05:00, Russia launched a large-scale offensive against Ukraine, bombing Ukrainian cities, including residential areas, kindergartens, hospitals and maternity hospitals. Ukrainians are courageously responding to Russia’s aggression, because we are fighting for our democratic country, where every life has a value. We are fighting not only for Ukraine, but for the whole of Europe, for its democratic rights and freedoms.

Ukraine needs support now more than ever. Such support is a guarantee of the European future of our state!

Europe has already demonstrated its unity in imposing sanctions on the Russian Federation, closing the skies to Russian aircraft and providing financial and military assistance to the Ukrainian army. Today, European leaders have the opportunity to prove that the sacrifices of the Ukrainian people were not in vain. In these terrible times for our country and for the whole European community, it is important to show that Europe is united in the struggle for peace. This will prove to the enemy that Europe has the political will to defend democracy and human rights.

We call on the European community to do everything possible to guarantee Ukraine’s accelerated accession to the European Union! We ask the European family to be consolidated, courageous and to prove its support for Ukraine as Ukraine has already shown it.
