Reforms Breakfast: “Judicial Reform: Expectations and Possible Scenarios”

We would like to kindly invite you to the RPR reforms breakfast “Judicial Reform: Expectations and Possible Scenarios” (for diplomats, representatives of international institutions and foreign correspondents), which will be held on Thursday, September 15, at 9:30-11:00 am at the RPR office (6 Olhynska St., 2nd floor, office 21)

The Verkhovna Rada has adopted long-awaited amendments to the Constitution regarding judiciary and the new Law «On the Judiciary and the Status of Judges» on June 2. The latter shall come into force in two weeks already – on September 30.

Are the judges ready for the changes? What kind of the Supreme Court should it be: a new or “renewed”? Who will be able to become the judge of the Supreme Court and what are the requirements for candidates? The new High Council of Justice (“Рада Правосуддя”) – which innovations can be expected and whether its activities will be more effective than of the old High Council of Justice (“Рада Юстиції”)? Will the High Qualifications Commission of Judges of Ukraine be able to provide high-quality selection and evaluation of new judges?

These and other questions will be answered by the following experts:

Leonid Yemets, MP, Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Legal Policy and Justice;

Taras Shevchenko, Director of the Center for Democracy and Rule of Law, Co-Chairman of RPR Board, co-founder of the “Chesno. Filter the Judiciary!” movement;

Mykhailo Zhernakov, Member of the RPR Board, RPR lead expert on judicial reform.
