Media-lunch “Missed Opportunity of the Election Legislation Reform”

Dear colleagues!

The Reanimation Package of Reforms and Democracy Reporting International would like to invite you to take part in the media-lunch “Missed Opportunity of the Election Legislation Reform”, which will be held on November, 2 at 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm at the office of the RPR (6 Olhynska str, off. 21).

The electoral system for the local elections, held on October, 25, was defined in June, and although it was described by some MPs as an ‘open list’ system, in reality it is a hybrid system which allows voters neither to have a choice on which candidate of a particular party is being elected, nor to be sure that their local district is actually represented at all in a council.

What are the benefits and shortcomings of this electoral system? Why is it necessary to ensure transparency of the pre-election campaign financing? How to make sure electoral systems are not being changed before each elections? What are the recommendations for further steps to ensure comprehensive electoral reform?

DRI and the RPR prepared a briefing paper “New Local Election Law: A Missed Reform Opportunity”, which will be presented by the coauthor, RPR expert Olena Chebanenko  and DRI Team Leader Nataliia Gladkova.

Presentation will be followed by expert discussion, the speakers will include:

Yuriy Klyuchkovskyi – President of the Election law institute

Oleksandr Chernenko – member of the Committee on Legal Policy and Justice of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine

Ihor Popov – deputy head of the Committee on Corruption Prevention and Counteraction of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine
